What's Good (mama's version)

If you knew more about my family, you'd probably immediately attribute my love for music to my uncle. He DJ'd in a nightclub, had a huge record collection (that we quarreled over at least once), and he was my gateway into things like Parliament-Funkadelic (and all the permutations of the P-Funk therein), Graham Central Station, and a lot of Funk, Jazz Fusion, etc. All due props to him.
This album goes extremely hard, shout out Dewitt.
My uncle does deserve a portion of the blame for why I am Like This™ in regards to music, but in truth you can lay a healthy amount of credit at my mother's feet. Whether it was cheering me on (and encouraging me to perform for her friends) when I memorized the lyrics to "Sledgehammer" when I was little...
...being delighted when I'd rush to tell her that Nancy Wilson was on BET On Jazz, because I knew she was one of her favorite vocalists...
...or listening to the stereo in the backseat during many car trips, music was ever-present in my early life, thanks to my mother.
This joint got CRAZY burn on black contemporary radio in the 80s, and my first time hearing it that I can remember is during a car ride to my grandma's house.
I wouldn't love music in the way I do without it being such a prominent and casual part of my upbringing, so whenever I'm able, I try to reconnect with her via that medium in some fashion. This usually takes the form of buying her CDs of new music that I think she'd dig, but that's faded off between the advent of streaming and other factors. As Mother's Day crept up on me, I realized that I don't think I ever told her about this blog at all. So, an idea occurred.
Our shared love for word games and puzzles already took care of my proper Mother's Day gift (shout out Erica Henderson for the rec on Puzzmo), but as I was pondering the idea of doing a "Quarterly Report" style blog for What's Good as sort of a digest to make the year-end blog a little easier, I thought about doing something similar for my mom.
Enter: What's Good (mama's version). A playlist of selected songs from the last four months of What's Good, based on what I think my mother (hi mom!) might enjoy. I'm going to try to make this an evolving playlist so that as What's Good Prime continues, it'll grow alongside. This is mainly for my mama, but hopefully some of your mamas, fathers, and other loved ones who don't rock with everything I listen to each week—due to cussin', harsh noises, general shenanigans—will like it too. Feel free to share it with them.
Thank you for everything, mama. I love you.
