What's Good (Week of 10/12/25)

The cover for Sudan Archives' 'THE BPM'. Sudan is posed with her arms up at her sides with cables and wires connected to her back as she looks at a light to her right.

Another eventful (derogatory) week, but I'm here to be a rest stop for you with What's Good. We lost a legend with the passing of D'Angelo (hang out at the end for some of my favorite songs and live performances), and along with everything else, it's a good enough reminder to give artists their flowers while they're here. Hopefully, you'll show some of the folks featured this week your love:

New Albums

Now without any further rambling, let's get started.

14 Essential 1975 Country Albums
’70s country is the source of plenty of current nostalgia despite being made (gulp) a half century ago. There are so many great albums that hit the 50 mark this year, though, and it only seemed right to give you all an excuse to listen to them — some will be

I don't feature a ton of country over here, but when I do, it's often informed by Don't Rock The Inbox. This week, the queen Natalie Weiner shared a list of essential albums from 1975 since 50 years is a good milestone, innit? I've been meaning to find more 70s country that's out of my comfort zone, so I'll be tapping in.

Tony Seltzer & Anysia Kym: Unravelling The Philostrophy
NYC underground hip-hop producer Tony Seltzer and mutant R&B singer-producer Anysia Kym discuss their collaborative album Purity, their go-to tools in Ableton Live, plus they share the beat from their track “Long 4” as a free download.

Dash Lewis chopped it up with Anysia Kym and Tony Seltzer for Ableton about their recently released collaborative effort Purity:

In making this record that doesn't sound like anything either of you has done, what have each of you learned about your own processes?

TS: As with every collaboration, it helped me push limits and try new things. I love working with somebody else, learning from them in their production and songwriting formats, and then bringing it back to what I do. Working with an artist one-on-one, making a beat in person, you tend to do less in the beat to get to the process of writing the song. That always helps me return to my own beat-making and consider whether it needs the 100 layers of percussion I'm about to add.

AK: I've worked mostly by myself for the majority of my career, until my latest collaborations, and it reached a point where I realized I needed to test the waters with someone else. It’s a selective process. I like to get to know people. We're making music at the end of the day, but it is nice to feel a level of familiarity. And though I like to make music alone, it's always so lovely to meet someone from whom you can find inspiration and push yourself. I feel like I'm biting Tony's answer. [Laughs] But it's the same thing.
