yaya bey sat down with the Rap Music Plug Podcast to talk this week's featured LP FIdelity, as well as its predecessor Do It Afraid, how her background (including her father, Grand Daddy I.U.'s experience) shaped her feelings on pursuit of music, maneuvering in the music industry and more.

Gwen Howerton talks the fact, fiction, and Texas of it all of the Toadies grunge-era classic, "Possum Kingdom" for Chron.

Rubberneck came out when my mom, Gini Howerton, was a freshman in high school in Fort Worth. She recalled her friend picking her up and immediately showing her this new band called the Toadies, who were from their neck of the woods. Like me, "Possum Kingdom" was like nothing she'd ever heard. The song "Tyler" became an anthem for her friend group. A grunge fan, most of what she heard on the radio came from the West Coast—not suburban North Texas.

"To have this band that started in freaking Fort Worth, Texas, which was not anywhere near what it is today, was so different," my mom said.

Equally cool to her was the actual subject of the song. While she spent more time at Eagle Mountain Lake, she was aware of Possum Kingdom Lake and the local urban legends in the area, both supernatural and not. My father, who attended TCU, chimed in with the names of real, gory killings that happened in the region. As we talked, Mom rattled off the names of various North Texas boogeymen, such as the goatman, the occasional Bigfoot, and vampires. At the time, "Possum Kingdom" seemed like it could have been about blood-sucking monsters.

"Just look at the lyrics, and you can see why a bunch of teenagers in the rich part of Fort Worth were like, 'yeah, it's about vampires,'" she said. (Reznicek told me that the song definitely "is not about vampires," though that didn't stop people from showing up to Toadies concerts dressed as them.)

wave Groove dropped a lovely live set for TIME // FORM Recordings' new TIME//FORM series where an artist performs a single set in different locations to explore "how time shapes form — the mix remains constant, while the environment, context, and perception shift."
