Someone's finally been convicted for the murder of Tupac Shakur, for as much closure as that can provide. As Jeff Weiss sums up for The Hollywood Reporter in the conclusion of his two week coverage of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, there's plenty of unanswered questions and no easy resolution.

During the trial, the easily understood cause-and-effect theory of the killing became entangled in the labyrinth that has characterized the last 30 years of whodunit theories: there were allegations of a role played by Bad Boy CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs in the murder, accusations of law enforcement corruption, the interconnectedness with the 1997 homicide of Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace, and enough far-fetched speculation to give even Candace Owens pause.

The trial was far more than a series of witnesses assembled to prove who killed 2Pac. It doubled as a history of Compton gang life and the story of the Death Row and Bad Boy beef. It was an indictment of hip-hop’s warped, symbiotic relationship with the media and an explanation of why it took law enforcement nearly three decades to make an arrest. This was no gangsta rap Nuremberg, but rather something closer to the trial of Adolf Eichmann — a case tried decades later in which the aging defendant wasn’t the actual killer but a banal middleman, a functionary and a lethal node of transport.

Andrew Friedman examines the embodiment of the "two Americas" of rap music for folks of a certain vintage in his concert report of Paul Wall and Termanology's joint show for their Repeat Repeat Repeat LP.

The great American philosopher Bomani Jones (also born and raised in Houston) talks about the racial divide in this country not as white v. Black, but more broadly as there being “two Americas.” It’s not a euphemism or a dog whistle, it’s just a clean way of conceptualizing a fact about American culture without doing a “white people be like this, Black people be like this.” And it’s useful because you can’t generalize about that many people at scale, and because there are a lot more than two races in this country. There are about 2 million Latinos in the Houston metro area, not to mention about 150,000 Vietnamese people and 150,000 South Asian folks. White and Black just isn’t sufficient. Which is to say, the most demographically interesting thing I noticed at the Paul Wall and Termanology show at Le Poisson Rogue on Friday was the number of young Indian dudes, who were probably also just “people from Texas.”
