What's Good (Bandcamp Friday Edition - Week of 8/31)

"Bandcamp Friday September 5" in black text over an olive green and pale green background. 'Bandcamp Friday' is in bubble lettering with 'September 5' in sans serif font.

Bandcamp Friday is upon us again, and like we always do about this time, it's a special edition of What's Good. In addition to all the new joints today like:

New Albums

  • AJ Suede
  • CRIMEAPPLE & V Don
  • El Michels Affair
  • freespottie & thefoodlord
  • Sankofa & Tali Rodriguez
  • Venna

New Singles

  • Darko The Super & andrew
  • HUMAN ERROR CLUB & Kenny Segal
  • Ivan Ave
  • Lexa Gates
  • Nolan The Ninja
  • Princess Nokia
  • YL & Another Planet (Lungs & Phiik)

Thanks to Bandcamp waving their share for the day, artists and labels get 100% of the profits from each sale. Also, artists and labels are taking the opportunity to get some sales and special offers off. Here's just a few of them:

Bandcamp Friday Deals

  • Three Dollar Pistol: The good brothers from the Wrecking Crew are offering flash sales on a couple of vinyl releases, with BLUu Edwards' (Curly Castro and Small Professor) All We Need is Kill and sleepingdogs' DOGSTOEVSKY both marked down to $15
  • FXCK RXP: FXCK RXP is taking 25% off all their Bandcamp exclusives variants, just use the code WHATIF. They're also offering 25% off all vinyl on their website through Monday @ Midnight PST.
  • Lana Del Rabies: Released today, Lana Del Rabies' one-off live Experimental Power Electronics set at Trade School in Altadena, CA on July 7th, 2025.
  • Insubordinate Records: 10% off everything on the Insubordinate Records Bandcamp with the code WEIRD for today only, including Yesterday's Weirdness is Tomorrow's Reason Why.
  • Prefuse 73: Take 95% off everything from the Failing Institute series and Tapes upon Tapes sample packs with the code setaprice95off. From Prefuse 73 themselves, "...I couldn’t figure out how to set up a: “name your own price” option that I liked...so, I set up a 95% off everything (that isn’t owned by a label) and I encourage everyone to use this to your advantage if you don’t have the means. I’d really love to see the existing digital releases here on vinyl / cassette) - so maybe this a bit of a fundraiser as well. - There are over 5 releases here and it’s a bit overwhelming but would be beautiful to see it finally happen."
  • Sankofa: Sankofa is opening up the KOFA CARD CLUB CARD which along with a physical 'Kofa trading card "gets you a digital download of everything I drop in 2026, plus 50% off any physical drop."

That's just a small sample, but like I said everything you cop from Bandcamp today puts more bread in an artists' pocket, sale or no. Happy hunting. Now with that out of the way, let's get into this week's foolishiness with some Bonus Beats.

Nanci Griffith and the Holes In Our Canon
We’ve made changes, but there’s still so far to go.

The queen Natalie Weiner writes for Don't Rock The Inbox about country and folk icon Nanci Griffith and the uneven application of "legacy" between men and women in music:

Legacy requires respect, and typically respect from (white) men — otherwise known as the ones most often in position to create canons and litigate legacies. It's why there are thousands of books on the Beatles and the Stones and just two extremely recent ones on Big Mama Thornton; why Dolly had to get old enough to no longer be threatening before she was truly recognized as a legend (and still, it's mostly the ferocity of her female fanbase that's put her in this position more than any sea change from the men who too often write our histories).

Video Dave was recently out on tour in Slovakia playing the Pohoda Festival, and had an accoustic session with Bene:

Bene put together the tour after he got us booked to play at Pohoda Festival which is an amazing annual event out there. We played Saturday night, the same day as Iggy Pop, and Queens of the Stoneage which is just a crazy sentence to be able to type out....

On Friday afternoon we were invited to record a video performance for Pohoda Festival digital, we were happy to get that chance.

Gabe ’Nandez and Preservation’s cosmic rap kismet
On their new collaborative album Sortilège, Gabe ’Nandez and Preservation hit a high water mark in their respective hip-hop careers. Read an in-depth interview here.

Dash Lewis chats with Gabe 'Nandez and Preservation on how Sortilège came together:

In the press materials, a notable talking point emphasized the big, heavy drums throughout. Pres, what about this project dictated the necessity for drums versus some of the more spare work that you've done in the past?

P: In listening to Gabe’s previous work, he just likes to spit. You need something to back that up, to push that through. And I had to show motherfuckers that I had some fucking beats. [Gabe laughs] That other stuff is not beats. I would have drummers hit me and say, "I love this," and I would ask, "There are no drums, so why do you like it?" And they're like, "Yeah, but there is, they just don't hear it!" So, I just had to kind of rep and be like, I do all of this. I come from all of it. For Gabe, he just needed some slappers; he needed some knock on that shit, so I gave it to him. [Gabe laughs]

Crumb came through the KEXP studios for a set mostly from their most recent LP AMAMA, with a couple of joints from Jinx and Ice Melt.
