Niko Straits takes Paste Magazine's Alt-Rock Dept. column back to 1995 for their experience with the Toadies' mythic "Possum Kingdom" (from their banger of an album Rubberneck, as a 13 year old.
The theory I always believed was that it was about vampires, or some offering of eternal life—the narrator in Lewis’ voice promising to be a gentleman behind the boathouse, where he will share his dark secret, promising he can make her beautiful forever. Her dark hair. Her soft skin. His blushing bride. His voice soft at first, wavering and fading into the song, like a spirit of the night who arrives as mist that hardens and sharpens the teeth that hold cravings in their hollows. This theory was laid out for me and others in the room by a giant man who proclaimed all songs sung by women as “chick bullshit,” who played air guitar with a jerking off motion when the whammy bar part kicked, and we smiled all polite and nervous until he left the room. We all agreed we liked his theory a lot more than we liked anything else about him, and it slowly became the truth in our hearts.

The homeys over at Don't Rock The Inbox sets the year off with a list of Ins and Outs for country music, with a few that apply no matter what kind of music you're into.
Going To Shows
Music venues have just about everything working against them right now — a stagnant economy and more people reining in their alcohol consumption (good for everyone's health and bad for a business model that is, unfortunately, built on selling drinks) compound the ongoing decimation of media promoting live music and trend of people staying home to entertain themselves virtually. But there's nothing like hearing music live, whether it's a legend or local artist playing covers at a bar. It's special, it's community building, it's invigorating at a time when we all sorely need reinvigorating. Needless to say, when you can avoid LiveNation, all the better; support venues that are fighting to survive against a monster monopoly, and musicians who are fighting to make a living the only way that's left, since recordings rarely net a profit these days except as a loss leader for shows. — NW

John Coltrane was born 100 years ago this year, and José James giving away his live album of Coltrane covers for free:
Happy New Year everyone!
In honor of John Coltrane’s centennial, I’m offering Facing East: The Music of John Coltrane 100% free, today, exclusively on Bandcamp.
Edited by yours truly and fully remixed by Ariel Shafir at Dreamland Studios, this release captures a special night at the legendary Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, featuring Michael Campagna, Jef Neve, Neville Malcolm, and Richard Spaven. It was one of those beautiful nights where everything aligned: music, audience, and spirit.
John Coltrane remains one of the most brilliant and important musical artists of the 20th century. May his music continue to be a guiding light for us all.
