Grayson Haver Currin's excellent interview and profile of Jeff Parker for Pitchfork charted his journey from dropping out of Berklee to being the vanguard of one of the most exciting scenes in jazz.
During the last decade, Parker’s routine has fostered one of the country’s most compelling new music scenes, where players from diverse backgrounds and demographics have converged to create wildly accessible improvised music. His ETA gigs led directly to his ETA IVTet, a spellbinding group with drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Anna Butterss, and saxophonist Josh Johnson; their third LP—Happy Today, out May 15—is a live demonstration of repetition as a form of change, the hypnotic rhythm of Bellerose and Butterss stretching a canvas across which Parker and Johnson glide and sway or worm their way inside. Parker’s gigs at ETA became a crucible for younger players. SML, for instance, took shape there. Area dynamos like Patrick Shiroishi and Max Jaffe are playing with Parker, too. Chiu is even part of the new Expansion Trio, a sample-based project that feels, at least in its early days, like a vivid intersection of Parker’s interests in electric guitar improvisation and electronic manipulation.
And when Parker and I meet for a long talk in his Tennessee hotel room in late March, he’s just flown in from New York, where he played Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in a band led by Flea. He is a linchpin on the bassist’s jazz debut, Honora.
“There’s this river of music inside of Jeff—all the stillness and violence and chaos and absolute ethereal beauty, it’s all there,” Flea tells me. “He is a remarkably sensitive human being who is all about being in a situation and listening and wanting to be of service to the music, without any theatrics or bombast. He just does it.”
