The homey Gary Suarez talks about Conway's frustratingly inaccessible new mixtape I HEARD YOU PAINT HOUSES:
The mixtape's rollout ostensibly targets Conway's most ardent and devoted fans, yet at every step of the process it treats those listeners shabbily. It defies the logic and business savvy that built Griselda (and, by extension, Drumwork) into the cultural force it became. Not including IHYPH on streaming platforms is more than reasonable, and artists should be paid for their work, whatever they wish to charge provided the audience is willing to pay. But this Laylo scheme overreaches to the point where more listeners will consider piracy than not. (I've seen multiple YouTube videos that purport to have the full mixtape, so that theory has already been proven.) And some fans, myself included, will likely come out of the other end of the scraping funnel feeling unhappy with the various intrusive touchpoints, and even resentful of Conway for subjecting them to it.
Sly5thAve brought a 12-piece ensemble to pay tribute to the legal Roy Ayers for Great Performances' concert series in LA. Also includes a starting DJ set from Linafornia honoring Dilla and the 20th anniversary of Donuts.
Dash Lewis sat down with What's Good fave Nickelus F to profile his career after the release of his latest (ahead of a promised deluge), Hardbody:
As his career developed, Nick cultivated a somewhat lopsided cadence: feverishly recording but releasing music at the reliable pace of a project or two every year or two. Despite a work ethic that outpaced his output, it was a comfortable consistency that helped to grow his fanbase beyond his hometown, beyond Virginia, to now tens of thousands of followers on social media and the storied reputation of “your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper.” He has a deep vault of hundreds, possibly thousands, of unreleased songs, an archive he’s mined on occasion, most notably for 2019’s stopgap diptych “The Gold Mine Vols. 1 & 2.” By most standards he’s remarkably prolific — when I ask how often he writes, he opens his Notes app and chuckles, scrolling through verses, song ideas, and stray bars for what feels like several minutes — but let him tell it, he’s constantly at risk of falling behind. “I’m racing against time,” he says definitively. “I’ve always felt like I needed to do more. I was losing sleep thinking about the hard drives of music that I’m sitting on that haven’t seen the light of day. It’s criminal that I could spend that much time writing, creating, pouring myself into something, and then never put it out.”
