What's Good (Week of 9/29 - Bandcamp Friday Edition)

A Bandcamp Friday graphic with a purple and blue background: Bandcamp Friday. October 4. Supported by Roland

A couple of big firsts this week! First edition of What's Good since the closure of the beloved Cohost, and also it's the first Bandcamp Friday edition of What's Good that makes its home soley on my blog. If it's your first time with me, every week I gather up as much good music from the week as I can, collect it into a big ol' list of videos and playlists, then top it off with news and features from around the web. I'm slowly working on getting the archives up here, but until the end of the year when Cohost shuts down entirely, you can check out them out over there.

As far as specials for this particular Bandcamp Friday, the good brothers over at Three Dollar Pistol have some deals, including:

As well as a new merch drop of the Sour Dub hoodie, celebrating Rich Jones' and Sleep Sinatra's LP.

Swimming Costume's entire discography is 25%-off for a total of $36, which gives you a perfect opportunity to cop andrew and Height Keech's can I write a requiem for you when you're dead? if you haven't already, and pre-order OKnice's upcoming Talking To My Dogs (first single featured in this week's haul) in one fell swoop.

Your Bandcamp Friday purchases also count toward pre-orders, like the just announced collab between Duncecap and steel tipped dove for the latter's Fused Arrow Records, The Need to Know.

And the brand new stuff from this week, including:

New Albums

  • Jabee
  • The Bug
  • Jonah Yano
  • Ohbliv
  • Broadcast
  • Shad & 14KT
  • Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

New Singles

  • Maria Somerville
  • Nappy Nina & Swarvy
  • Lunice
  • Ela Minus
  • Pivot Gang
  • OKnice
  • Faye Webster

And a whole lot more, but up first, some Bonus Beats.

Bonus Beats

Wednesday's YouTube channel posts short video montages each month of their performances, touring, and odd bits of their life as a band. This one's a little different than normal, as the band's home of Asheville has been devastated by Hurricane Helene, so along with their normal slices of life, you'll get footage of what things look like on the ground. Right at the top, they offer links for helping out via Beloved Asheville, Asheville Survival, and Pansy Collective. In addition to that, I'd also recommend tapping in with Mutual Aid Disaster Relief if you have the means:

Ahead of Chamber Music II, Blueprint played a live beat set on his SP-404 mk2 in Columbus, OH's Schiller Park.

Jay Smooth's return to our algorithms has borne delicious fruit, this time in the form an examination of New York City's love affair with garbage mayoral candidates, with some bars for the recently indicted Eric Adams.

Black Ends blessed us with the full set of their live show at Neumos in Seattle, as a treat before next week's release of their debut Psychotic Spew.

Acantha Lang pays tribute to a soul legend with a set of five Donny Hathaway covers.

The Rap Music Plug podcast (with Dash Lewis stepping in as a co-host) sat down with three-fourth's of ØKSE to talk their self-titled album, the philosophy behind their music, their recording process, and more.
