What's Good (Week of 1/18/26)

The cover of DJ Harrison's "ElectroSoul", features DJ Harrison with his arms crossed, wearing a wool coat and black beanie.

Friday's here, so it's time for What's Good. Welcome to my weekly blog of new tunes, music-related ephemera, and general good (or at least not bad) vibes. This week we've got new joints from

New Albums

  • 067Red
  • DJ Harrison
  • Roc Marciano
  • Stik Figa & Fantastic Sound

New Singles

  • Gregory Ulhmann
  • Marlon Craft
  • The Scythe (Denzel Curry & friends)
  • Sonnyjim & Sebb Bash

And more! A little lean on the playlists this week (comparitively speaking), so Bonus Beats will be a little chunky, and I've got an update to my charity giveaway of a copy of Mercy.

Before we get started, I encourage you to subscribe to the blog so you can get everything I write here as a newsletter the minute I hit publish. I usually only send stuff once a week, so I won't spam you, and every now and then I post SECRET BIDNESS that's email only.

Donation Giveaway Update

Timing on me going public with the giveaway was a little inauspicious, as maybe a day or two later, ICE began their assault on Minneapolis. After putting some thought into it, I'm going to do two things: 1) Extending the deadline for submissions out another month. 2) Adding another org. to the list.

Make a charitable donation to either:

  • Trans Youth Emergency Project: A project from the Campaign for Southern Equality, offering logistical and financial support to families affected by laws restricting or banning care for transgender children across the United States
  • Al Otro Lado: An organization providing legal and humanitarian aid for immigrant communities in the U.S. and Mexico, with litigation services, family reunification, and a number of other programs.
  • The Women's Foundation of Minnesota's Immigrant Response Fund: A fund directing resources to organizations across the Twin Cities metro area and Greater Minnesota that provide basic needs, urgent legal services, and advocacy resources for communities impacted by immigration-related harm.

Then fill out this Google form with proof of your donation. I'll close out the form on 2/28/26, then I'll contact a randomly selected one of you for an address to send the record to.

If you're looking for more that you can do to support, a good place to start is Stand With Minnesota, a directory of places to donate to on the ground. Love and strength to everyone in Minneapolis, and fuck ICE. Now let's get on with the blog.

The World of Kenny Dennis
Read Nate Patrin on The World of Kenny Dennis

The homey Nate Patrin put together a profile and retrospective of Serengeti's legendary alter-ego, Kenny Dennis, including capsule reviews of each album in KDCU (Kenny Dennis Cinematic Universe). Bears, Hawks, Sox, Bulls, things of that nature.

But the further Serengeti went into the theoretical inner reaches of Kenny’s personality, the more it became apparent that there was a deeper story to be told. “Dennehy” wasn’t just someone rapping in character, it was developing a character who could rap — someone with a different voice and flow to him, an exercise in pushing past Geti’s usual parameters into the flow of someone raspier, louder, and more prone to getting stuck in the same handful of self-defining reference points as a way to stave off a succession of personality crises. Kenny’s backstory is both absurd and tragic, a sort of dark comedy a’la Fear of a Black Hat through the Coen Brothers: an aspiring ‘90s rap star who blew it because he couldn’t brush off a slight from NBA star and Fu-Schnickens guest Shaquille O’Neal, he is left to spend the ensuing years constantly wondering what if as he marinates in his squandered potential between paeans to Andre Dawson and Polish sausage.

Light Work [Sade Suite], by August Fanon
1 track album

August Fanon dropped this shelved Sade-inspired instrumental mix for her birthday over on his Bandcamp.

I love this Light Work mix. It is one of my favorite instrumental album I've created for many reasons, I think primarily tho every time I listen to it I can't help but to remanence (sic) upon where I was creatively at as a producer, what my horizons were, my challenges. Also; specifically, how I felt about Sade, what it felt like to hunt down all the clips and watch the interviews and hear her familiar voice over my own creations. The satisfaction upon completion. I felt like I made something she could appreciate.

Recent What's Good faves Commitment are one of the latest bands featured on hate5six, with a recording of their live set from Ortlieb's in Philadelphia, PA.

Boiler Room headed down to Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios for a legends of Memphis Rap session, with live sets from Tommy Wright III, Shawty Pimp, Al Kapone, DJ Zirk, DJ Spanish Fly, and La Chat which you can check out up above.

Bugseed uploaded this live set from the "Across" event back in 2016, with news that he and the event's organizer Alto are working on a follow-up to the beat tape of the same name.

Flying Lotus pulled up The Lot Radio, 'nuff said.

Donate to Support for Mook’s Family & Son, organized by RM Family
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Avaron Simms, known to many as Reaper M… RM Family needs your support for Support for Mook’s Family & Son

Reaper Mook has passed away. Hearing the news was a shock, and beyond the fact that we keep losing artists long before their time, I'd only relatively recently tapped in with Mook via his feature on Seafood Sam's "Early Birds" back in 2022.

You can contribute to a GoFundMe to help support his funeral costs as well as establishing a trust for his son, and get hip to his catalog if you're not already.
